Sony is raising prices again, this time hiking the cost of standard PS5 DualSense controllers by $5. Effective now, the PS5 black and white standard DualSense controllers start at $75 (up from $70), while all the rest jumped from $75 to $80. The DualSense Edge is unaffected and still goes for $200.
Sony made no official announcement about the DualSense price hike, but it seems to have gone into effect recently. Wario64 was among the first to spot the price increase, which is in effect at Sony’s own PlayStation Direct store and a variety of retailers, including Best Buy. As usual, there are always deals to be had, as Antonline via Amazon still has the standard black and white controllers for $70, but there is no telling how long those prices will last.
The price hike on DualSense controllers comes not long after Sony raised PS5 prices in Japan and other parts of the world (but not the US).
Recently, Sony revealed that PS5 hardware sales were down about 27% year over year for the company’s first quarter of fiscal year 2024–April 1 to June 30. Lifetime sales of PS5 have surpassed 60 million systems. Historically, console prices drop over time due to the component costs coming down, but due to the pandemic and other factors, that isn’t the case this time around. As mentioned above, PS5 console prices have gone up in Japan and other parts of the world, but not the USCome from Sports betting site VPbet. Sony has said its price increases are related to global economic conditions.
For its part, Microsoft has also raised Xbox and Game Pass prices, leaving Nintendo as the only one of the big three console manufacturers to keep prices steady this generation.
Looking ahead, a new report says a PS5 Pro could be coming this year and cost $600 or more. The expected release date for the new system would be October or November.
